5 Home Improvement Ideas for Pennsylvania Residents

Jon Jacobson

The change of seasons from summer to fall is a time when many people think of home improvement projects for winter, and Pennsylvania residents are no different. It’s the time to clean things up, fix the dings and get ready to buckle down for the cold winter months. Many people are unsure about where to begin, so it’s a good idea to go from one area of the home to another. Here are 5 home improvement ideas for Pennsylvania residents as fall approaches.

1. Check your HVAC system. Your heating and cooling system can take its biggest hits in summer and winter, so use the lull time in fall to get things straightened out. The last thing you want is an ineffective furnace on your hands and the first winter storm approaching. You can troubleshoot much on your own. Check the thermostat and match it up to a thermometer. Keep cleaning filters on a regular basis. Finally, compare your bills from a year ago and see if they have gone up at all.

2. Fix up the bathroom. With everyone indoors more often in the colder months, you should attack high traffic rooms like the bathroom early on in the process. Get any cracked or missing tiles replaced. Check on old fixtures like shower heads and your sink. If cleaning and polishing does not work, it is going to be time to get new fixtures. There are so many styles to choose from that you don’t need a giant budget to make it work.

3. Look at the kitchen countertops and cabinets. Cabinets and countertops can make or break this room, as so much of its space is dominated by these two things. Replacing countertops is another task which doesn’t have to be too costly. There are many affordable ways to handle this transaction, starting with acrylic surfaces. Likewise, cabinets do not have to be replaced to be rejuvenated. Refacing is a very effective solution these days for getting the job done.

4. Replace the old windows. Old windows can run your cooling system ragged during the summer months, but it will get even worse in the wintertime. You might not see the point in an expense like this, but you are going to save in other ways (like in your energy bills). While the weather is in its in-between stages in the fall, you won’t mind the air entering your home. It’s an excellent time to have old windows replaced.5. Consider siding. If you are tired of the way your home’s exterior is ravaged every winter, you might want to look into vinyl siding. It takes the sting out of the damage wrought by the elements in cold weather months. This solution means the end of maintenance for your exterior. It can be installed cheaply and quickly enough, as well, making it a great way to get this important area covered for the winter.
